Solar Panel Installation in Hastings & East Sussex

Generate more of your own electricity and take greater control over how your home uses energy.

Carley Renewables designs and installs solar panel systems for homeowners across Hastings and East Sussex, with each installation considered around the property, available roof space, household electricity use and what the homeowner wants to achieve.

Generate more of the electricity your home uses

Solar panels convert daylight into electricity that can be used throughout your home. When your panels are generating, the electricity produced can contribute towards the everyday demand from appliances, lighting and other electrical equipment, reducing the amount that needs to be purchased from the grid.

The amount a system can generate will depend on factors including the size of the installation, roof orientation, shading, weather and seasonal conditions. Our role is to help you understand what is realistically suitable for your property rather than simply fitting as many panels as possible.

Solar panels designed around your home

No two properties use electricity in exactly the same way.

A household that is occupied throughout the day may use solar generation differently from a home that is largely empty until the evening. Someone planning to buy an electric vehicle may also have very different future energy requirements from someone whose priority is simply reducing electricity bought from the grid.

The result should be a system that makes sense for the property rather than a one size fits all recommendation.

  • Available roof space
  • Roof orientation and layout
  • Potential shading
  • Current electricity use
  • When electricity is typically used
  • Future energy requirements
  • Battery storage
  • EV charging
  • The homeowner’s priorities

Solar panels and battery storage

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, but households do not always use that electricity at the same time it is being generated. This is where battery storage can become useful.

A home battery can store surplus electricity generated during the day and make that energy available later, such as during the evening when solar generation has reduced. For homeowners considering both technologies, we can look at solar panels and battery storage as one connected energy system.

Solar panels and EV charging

If you own an electric vehicle or expect to in the future, it is worth considering EV charging when designing your wider energy setup.

Solar generation can contribute towards the electricity used to charge an electric car at home, depending on when the vehicle is connected, the amount of electricity being generated and the other demands within the property. We can help you look at solar panels and home EV charging together rather than treating them as completely separate installations.

What happens to solar electricity you do not use?

Electricity generated by your solar panels will normally be used by the property first. Depending on how the system is configured, surplus electricity may then be:

Stored

A home battery can retain surplus electricity for later use.

Used elsewhere

Additional loads may be able to use available generation.

Exported

Electricity that is not used or stored may be exported back to the electricity network where appropriate.

The exact behaviour depends on the system installed and how it is configured.

Is my property suitable for solar panels?

Many different property types can be suitable for solar panels, but suitability should be assessed rather than assumed.

Roof size and orientation are important, but they are not the only considerations. Shading, structural condition, electrical setup and how much electricity the household actually uses can all affect the recommendation.

You do not need to work this out yourself. Start your Carley Energy Profile and tell us a little about your home.

Solar panel FAQs

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight rather than relying exclusively on direct sunshine, although generation varies depending on conditions.

Do I need a south facing roof?

Not necessarily. Different roof orientations can potentially support viable solar installations. The property needs to be assessed individually.

Do I need battery storage with solar panels?

No. Solar panels can operate without a battery. Battery storage may, however, allow you to keep more of your generated electricity for use later.

Can solar panels charge an electric car?

Solar generation can contribute towards EV charging, although the amount will depend on generation, household demand and when the vehicle is charging.

Can you add panels to an existing system?

Potentially. Existing equipment, available roof space and the electrical configuration would need to be assessed first.
